Who can tell, looking in from outside,
what another's life is like?
A glimpse into a window
doesn't necessarily reveal the truth
of what is lived inside.
Appearances deceive; facades are in place.
The most appealing arrangement designed
to show the passer-by a charming domesticity
can disguise a hell of unhappiness and regret
that will never be admitted in conversation.
The same can be said of people,
Matthew and Shakespeare be damned!
I've looked into enough eyes to know.
They're often not windows to the soul.
Eyes lie every bit as often
as what can be seen from the sidewalk.
Eyes lie every bit as often as tongues.
