Description
Mudge's balsam inhaler, English, circa 1780. This inhaler, made of pewter, was used to treat respiratory disorders such as colds and bronchitis. Hot water and a pungent medicinal balsam were put in the inhaler, and the steam and balsam vapours were inhaled via a tube connected to the hole in the top. Dr. John Mudge invented this early inhaler and described it in his book A Radical and Expeditious Cure for a Recent Catarrhous Cough, published in 1778.
