Description
Phenakistiscope card. This card was designed to be rotated as a spinning disc while the viewer looked through the equally spaced radial slits at a reflection of the card in a mirror. This device, and the closely related anorthoscope, was invented in the early 1830s by Belgian (Wallonian) physicist Joseph Antoine Ferdinand Plateau (1801-1883). The phenakistiscope is an example of an early stroboscopic device. This one, showing two men throwing and catching cakes and stars, is from 'Optical illusions; or magic panorama' (London, 1833) by Thomas McLean.
