"Philosophy Consoling Boethius," an illustration from c.1460-1470. Philosophy, personified as a fashionably dressed young woman, consoles Boethius over the loss of his position as Roman envoy. She instructs him on the ways of Fortune, whose wheel is always turning. Boethius (c.480 - 524/525 AD, born in Rome), was a philosopher of the early 6th century, who also wrote about music, astronomy, geometry, and arithmetic.
