Phobos and Mars, artwork. Phobos (grey, lower left) is the larger of the two Martian moons. It is irregular in shape, measuring 19 by 21 by 27 kilometres. Phobos orbits Mars in around 7.6 hours at an average distance of 9400 kilometres. The large Valles Marineris canyon system is seen on the visible hemisphere of Mars. Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun, has a diameter of around 6800 kilometres.
