Photosynthesis, artwork. Photosynthesis is the process by which most plants and some micro-organisms (right) convert sunlight into chemical energy. In plants the process occurs in specialised organelles called chloroplasts (left). Photosynthesis requires water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Oxygen (O2) is a by-product of the process.
