Oh fascinating! So the fish here (eaten live) had no chance at all? It perplexes me, I'm actually writing a report on fish-eating birds for school coming up! If gulped down, I would think the pretty big fish would be scrambling to turn around inside the elastic gullet/stomach? The bird must be pretty determined and real hungry! Even at the start wouldn't the acids make the fish more frantic and be trying it's best to escape becoming entombed inside?! You have some other cool shots too, keep it up! ;)

My experience is the fish always loses, Kyle. I've seen them swallow fish that are almost half their size. Because they swallow them head first the fish can not go any direction but forward down their gullet. Their fins/barbs keep them from backing out.

Amazing capture! That looks like a pretty big/spiky fish not too happy to be staring down its captor's throat here! So does the Grebe really manage to win the battle and gulp that whole thing okay? Does the fish put up a good fight, if eaten does the unlucky prey get swallowed wriggling all the way down as well?!
