Painting - Oil On Canvas

The great sculpture, Pieta, by Michelangelo is my favorite piece of art in the world. Its beauty, detail and imagery are unmatched, in my opinion.
I went to Rome to primarily see the sculpture some years ago. When I arrived at the Vatican, the piece was set far away behind glass. For its protection, it was roped off in some distance so you couldnt go up close to the piece.
However, the distant view didnt detract or diminish the impact of the sculpture. There were people in tears, standing almost comatose behind the distant ropes.
Many have asked me why I didnt paint the facial features. I realized in Rome, that this sculpture was more than the genius details and facial features; it was also about the power of the complete image.
Standing there in person, I noticed no person was trying to make out her nose or his mouth. No person was disappointed viewing the piece so far away. The totality of the piece said it all and I tried to capture this power and beauty in this painting.
