Pieter van Musschenbroek (1692-1761), Dutch scientist and professor of philosophy and mathematics. Musschenbroek taught at the University of Duisburg in the period 1719 to 1723, then at the University of Utrecht. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1734, he took up a position as professor at Leiden University in 1739. His most famous work was his Leyden jar, the first capacitor, in 1746. The Latin inscription gives his birth year and names him as a medical doctor, philosopher and mathematics professor at Leiden University (Academia Lugduno-Batava). Engraving by Johann Jacob Haid (1704-1767) after Jan Maurits Quinkhard (1688-1772).
