This is a beautiful photo of a pink Christmas Cactus, or the Schlumbergera bridgessii. It is also know as an Orchid Cactus as you can see the simularity. The Christmas cactus is a popular, winter-flowering houseplant native to Brazil. The pendulous stems of the Christmas cactus makes it a great choice for hanging baskets. Cacti are believed to have evolved in the last 30 to 40 million years ago. The green, flattened, leaf-like structures that make up the majority of a Christmas Cactus are actually modified stem segments called cladodes. In most cacti, the leaves have been modified into spines which have many different functions for the plant. In the Christmas Cactus, the leaves and the spines are absent. The flowers are available in a wide variety of colors including red, purple, orange, pink, fuschia, cream, etc. This Pink variety was taken at my home, right before Christmas. These holiday cactus blooms have some magnificant colors at their peak. This was set against a black background the really bring out the beauty of the bloom. No other modifications have been made to this photo other than changing the background to black for the accent. The pedals of the bloom have a very attractive look that almost looks like glitter has been applied. This is a very attractive print for any room.
