Hypoestes/Polka Dot Plant
As its common name of Polka Dot plant suggests, this plant has spotted leaves. It grows rapidly, usually becoming 6 to 12 inches tall and sometimes equally wide, though it may become as much as 2 feet tall. The 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inch leaves are hairy and densely set. Two varieties, 'Pink Brocade' and 'splash', are even more attractive than the basic species because their leaves have many more spots. The plants tend to become straggly after a year and should be discarded, but new plants are easy to propagate.
Polka Dot plants do best in bright indirect or curtain-filtered sunlight; if only artificial light is available, provide at least 400 foot-candles. Night temperatures of 65 to 70 and day temperatures of 75 to 85 are ideal. The soil should be barely moist at all times and fertilizer is not necessary. Propagate from stem cuttings at any season. Some gardeners start a few young plants at least once a year as replacements for straggly old ones. Use a packaged highly organic potting mixture formulated for African violets. Watch for aphids.
