* FIRST PLACE TIE IN PAINT OR DRAW THE UNITED KINGDOM CONTEST APRIL 2023 IN BEST OF BRITISH GROUP Cowdray House is one of England's most important early Tudor houses visited by Queen Elizabeth I and King Henry VIII. It was partially destroyed by fire in 1793. It's ruins set in the landscape of Cowdray Park in the heart of South Down National Park in Sussex England.
In this watercolor, I have placed myself and easel in a glorious field of Suffolk sheep on a spring day. When I was a little girl, I had a pet Southdown sheep. I can think of nothing better than being surrounded by these sweet and peaceful animals while painting. My sister in law who does geneology research has recently discovered that a branch of my father's family traces back to Francis Yate in the 1500's, who came into this great house through an inheritance on his wife's side of the family. I decided it would be wonderful to paint it and fantasize about the past. Howerver, since my relative was imprisoned in the Tower of London for recusancy during the reign of Henry VIII, after King Henry VIII's dispute and separation from the Catholic church; it may be that the present is a better place to be than the past. :)
