Head of a butterfly. Polarised light micrograph of the head and coiled proboscis of a Cabbage White butterfly, Pieris brassicae. The proboscis is made from two parallel, interlocking parts, each of which carries muscle bundles, nerves and tracheae. Between the two inner, concave faces of these parts is the suction tube, used to take in food such as the nectar of flowers. Magnification x40 at 5x4 inch size.
