Description
Robert Burns, the internationally famous Scottish poet, was born in the town of Alloway in Ayrshire. The cottage where he was born has been beautifully restored. A short distance away has been built the wonderful Robert Burns Birthplace Museum.
The Poet's Path is a connecting walkway and grassed area connecting the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum site with Burns Cottage. The Poet's Path winds its way through a pleasant green area planted with trees and lined with a series of weathervanes illustrating the most striking scenes from Burns' epic narrative poem "Tam O' Shanter". Returning home from a drinking session, Tam sees the devil dancing with a coven of witches. Discovered, he flees on his faithful horse Meg, pursued by the furious witches. His only hope is to cross the bridge over the River Doon since witches cannot cross running water. As they reach the bridge a witch grabs Meg's tail, but the brave horse stretches for the bridge and takes Tam safely over, leaving her tail in the grasp of the witch! A wonderful poem which I hope you will read. Most people in the world sing one of Burns' songs each year - "Auld Lang Syne".
