Polar Bear And Cub
Photograph - Photograph
Polar bear and cub. Polar bear (Ursus maritimus) sitting with her cub. Polar bears are large carnivores which inhabit the ice floes and coastal waters of the Arctic region. They are solitary animals, meeting only to mate. The mother is then responsible for the infant. Pregnant polar bears dig a den out of ice on land. During her winter rest (not true hibernation), between one and three cubs are born. The mother nurses her cubs in the den until they emerge in the spring. The young nurse for around a year and a half. They may be the largest land carnivore, with some bears weighing over 700 kilograms. Photographed at Churchill, Manitoba, Canada.
