Photograph - Photograph
Political blood transfusion. 19th-century satirical artwork on politics and a blood transfusion. Blood transfusions took place in the 19th century, but only began to be safe from 1901 when blood groups were discovered. Puck (left) is standing next to an 'Independent' who is undergoing a blood transfusion with an aged 'Democracy'. Those observing include German-US statesman Carl Schurz (far left, 1829-1906), US clergyman Henry Ward Beecher (next to Schurz, 1813-1887), and US journalist Henry Watterson (centre, 1840-1921). Chromolithograph, by Joseph F. Keppler, from the 3 December 1884 issue of 'Puck'.
