Pope John Xxiii Icon
Mixed Media - Cut Paper/mixed Media
Pope John XXIII has not yet been officially declared a saint by the Church, but he is recognized as such in the hearts of millions of Catholics and others around the world.
Pope John was a loving and beloved pastor of his people, a humble "servant of the servants of God," and at the same time a bold leader of the worldwide Catholic Church, with the vision to initiate the Second Vatican Council as a means of reforming the Church of Jesus Christ to speak to and serve the world in the modern era.
This picture made of cut paper and mixed media fits the form I have used for my most recent icons, including these main items: bold colors and textures using layered paper parts along with highlights in paint and ink; a floral patterned border; an architectural frame around the figure, following a common motif in early Christian art; a background landscape; and a focus on the figure of the saint--a sine qua non of an icon--along with certain details and symbols relevant to the life and meaning of the saint.
