Description
Hand painted digital interpretation and composite of a National Park Service image and another of a tall ship. Done on a Wacom tablet in a realistic style, each brushstroke is painted individually.
Portland Head Lighthouse, in Portland, Maine, was the very first lighthouse to be commissioned by the US government. Commissioned in 1789, completed in 1790 and first lit by 16 whale oil lamps in early 1791, the light is one of the most famous, most painted lighthouses in the country. It has been in continuous use since the first lighting and is still run by the US Coast Guard. The light was extinguished between 1942 and 1945 to avoid guiding German submarines patrolling the Maine shoreline.
In spite of the carefully maintained light, there was one famous wreck that struck the ledge at Portland Head on Christmas Eve 1886. The Annie C. McGuire was wrecked in spite of the fact that the crew all claimed they could see the light well before striking the head. Thanks to the quick action of the keeper, Joshua Strout, his son Joseph, and his wife, Mary, all aboard were saved. Although there was some suspicion that the captain of the McGuire had wrecked the ship purposely as the McGuire was in financial trouble, the case was not proven. The Strout family served as keepers from 1869 to 1928, one year shy of six decades.
