Potes is one of the most attractive villages in Cantabria, in the north of Spain. The village is in the centre of the historic Libana region, an area that is surrounded by spectacular mountains, with running streams and rivers. Its old quarter has the Property of Cultural Interest designation.
............................................
The small town of Potes is located in the centre of Libana, on a north oriented hillside. The hill called La Viorna is dominating the town, with a great stone and concrete cross, right on the summit. To the north, a road leads towards the district of Rases, and to the south, a path takes us to the hermitage of Valmayor, whose image is much worshipped by the locals.
........................................
Although the city of Potes suffered much destruction in 1936 during the civilian war, the Barrio Viejo, the old district in the hart of the city remains preserved with a spectacular medieval aspect. The two old bridges "puente de San Cayetano" and "puente de la Carcel" stand strong as representation of past centuries.
.............................................................
The first written document making reference to the town of Potes is from the 28th of March, 847, quoting: "strata publica qui discurrit ad pautes ...". The old parochial church and the town appear in a document from the year 952. On the 12th of July of 990, the presbitery Vermundo and his mother donated to the church of san Vicente, in Potes, the hermitages of Santa Mara in Valmayor, San Cosme and San Damin, Santa Olalla, and San Pedro, built in the town neighborhood.
............................................................................
It streets have many bridges, as well as buildings and monuments with centuries of history. Potes was originally the dominion of the Infante Tello (14th century), son of King Alfonso XI of Castile, and in 1445 became the property of the Marquis of Santillana and his descendants, the dukes of El Infantado. Specifically, the tower known as the Torre del Infantado, a sturdy construction dating from the 15th century and until recently the site of the Town Hall is one of the most important monuments in the town today. Other buildings and sites of interest in the capital of the historic region of Libana include various stately homes and ancestral mansions such as the house-tower of Orejn de la Lama (Baroque), the San Vicente Parish Church, with architectural elements dating from the 14th to the 18th century, and the ancient bridges of San Cayetano and La Crcel spanning the Quiviesa riverbed.
............................................................
Its stunning natural surroundings also make Potes an ideal destination for sports at any time of year. The list is long: hiking, mountain biking, climbing, mountain skiing, paragliding, hunting, fishing... Make sure you sample the village cuisine, with dishes such as cocido lebaniego (chickpea casserole) and game stews. We should make special mention of the famous, traditionally distilled liqueurs, such as orujo. All these products are available every Monday at a traditional market with deep roots in the region. Potes celebrates its local festival, La Santsima Cruz, on 14 September. Furthermore, the busiest, most important livestock fair in all Cantabria takes place in November.

Potes is a municipality in the autonomous community of Cantabria in Spain. It is the capital of the Comarca of Libana and is located in the centre of it. It is bordered to the north by Cillorigo de Libana, to the west by Camaleo, to the south by Vega de Libana and to the east by Cabezn de Libana.
..................................
The town of Potes is located at the confluence of four valleys, near where the River Quiviesa flows in the River Deva, the latter born at altitudes of the Picos de Europa. Like the rest of the Libana region, Potes enjoys a Mediterranean microclimate that allows the cultivation of the vines, walnut and poplar. Overlooking the town is Arabedes Mountain (694m).
History
.............................................................
Potes is located in a strategic location: at the point where the two rivers of Libana meet: the Deva and its tributary the Quiviesa. There is little trace of prehistoric occupation in the region, but the Romans who knew the power of strategic site, and named it Pontes. A village was founded in the 8th century, under Alfonso I of Asturias. Potes appeared for the first time in a document written in 847, the document mentions the parish church and the town. Later in the 10th century, thanks to its booming economy, Potes becomes the administrative centre of the Comarca of Li@eacutebana. Potes was considered a city from the 13th century and received royal favour.
.......................................................................
In the Becerro de Behetras manuscript (1351), it appears as the property of Tello Alfonso, son of Alfonso XI of Castile. During the late middle Ages, like all of Libana, the town was involved in the confrontation between the lineages of Manrique Castaeda and Mendoza. In 1444 John II of Castile resolved the issue in favour of the Marquis of Santillana. The Marquis made Potes the capital of Liebana, and erected a large tower, called the Torre del Infantado (15th century). In this same period prominent buildings such as the nearby Tower of Orejn de la Lama and the San Cayetano Bridge were built.
....................................................................................
In the modern age, Potes remained a place of manorialism. The Duke of Infantado appointed its mayor. Many villagers immigrated to America, and the riches of the new continent allowed the construction of notable buildings in the village. In 1822, Potes received its own town council, being head of a judicial district covering Potes, Castro and Cillorigo, Cabezn de Libana, Camaleo, Espinama, Pesaguero, Tresviso and Vega de Libana. Thirty years later, it became part of the judicial district of San Vicente de la Barquera.
During the Spanish Civil War, Potes was hit by a fire caused by the Republican side that destroyed the old town, it was rebuilt afterwards. The old town was classified as a Conjunto Histrico in 1983.bana and is located in the centre of it. It is bordered to the north by Cillorigo de Libana, to the west by Camaleo, to the south by Vega de Libana and to the east by Cabezn de Libana.

Potes in Cantabria is a pretty medieval town beside the stunning mountain backdrop of the Picos de Europa National Park.
...............................................
The former dominion of the Dukes of El Infantado, Potes has a fascinating Old Town for you to discover - a maze of cobbled streets with some wonderful architecture. The Torre del Infantado (Tower of the Infantry) is the historical symbol of Potes, a square, very solid work of masonry which was the stately residence of the Dukes of El Infantado. The beautiful church of St Vicente also sits in the Old Town. Now classed as an historical monument, the Old Town was mostly destroyed by a fire set by Republicans during the Spanish Civil War and has a distinct medieval atmosphere. Just outside of the town is the Ermita de la Virgen de Valmayor, a pretty chapel containing the image of the Virgin of Valmayor, which is carried through the streets in a procession every year on 15 August.
..........................
The town has many festivals and fairs throughout the year, many are religious processions but there is also the Feast of the Orujo in November which celebrates the local speciailty grape brandy, Orujo. Be sure to try some of this brandy, made from the products left over from wine-making, which can come in a variety of different flavours. Sample some after a bowl of traditional cocido labienagos, a stew made from chickpeas for which the area is known. Or, why not visit the Monday market and buy the produce to make your own version of this classic dish, or pick up some locally-made cheeses and honey? There are many shops in the town for souvenirs, maps and guidebooks with some shops offering climbing and outdoors supplies for those wanting to explore the local area.
