R-1 Soviet rocket engine. The R-1 (SS-1 scunner, of SA11) was a Soviet copy of the German V-2 rocket . Construction of the missile began in 1947 under the orders of Stalin after the Soviets captured several key V2 rocket production facilities. The first tests were carried out in September 1948, and it was officially used by the Soviet army in 1950. The R-1 missile could carry a 785 kilogram warhead, with a maximum range of 270 kilometres and an accuracy of about 5 km.
