Description:
Raku Moon
This piece stands approx. 11 inches tall and was created
from 2 slabs of a good robust raku clay. It is perhaps my best Raku creation. Everything I did to create this piece worked to perfection! It was well thought out and formed flawlessly. Raku Moon represents one half of the duality of our human experience.
The design began to take shape while I was visiting with my brother in Switzerland. My brother is a great potter and during the summer teaches Raku workshops. Whenever I am fortunate enough to be there in the summer I always help out with the workshops. Part of my reward is to fire my own work after the students have been satisfied. Another reward is the location of the kiln fire....it is on top of a small hill overlooking rolling valleys and distant mountains! It is beautifully serene and lends itself to the way I feel about the art of Raku. If you ever get a chance to participate in one of my brother\'s Raku workshops I would highly recommend it!
The finished appearance of my design was dependent on the proper functioning of the Raku glaze that my brother and I created and proper handling of the firing and smoking.
specific areas of the clay piece were left unglazed to contrast the glaze. The glaze needed to stress crackle fairly consistently once it was removed from the kiln fire at approx. 1700 degrees F and it did. When removed from the kiln it was placed into a tub full of sawdust where it ignited the sawdust. The resulting smoke then penetrated every area that was not glazed including the crackles in the glaze as it cooled. The black charcoal appearance is the smoke from the sawdust embedded in the clay body. its contrast with the glazed portion worked beautifully!
