"Reflections," oil on canvas, signed/dated 1959 l/l,
20" x 16" sight, 25" x 21" frame.
About the Painting: This painting is in very good condition. There is some loss of paint along the edges where the canvas was rubbed by an earlier frame, otherwise there is no damage.
About the Artist: Born in Watertown, Connecticut, Alice Stoddard was a landscape, portrait, and marine painter. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Thomas Eakins, Thomas Anshutz and William Merritt Chase. She also studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women. In 1948, she married artist Joseph Pearson.
During World War I, Stoddard did battlefield drawings and paintings while serving with the YMCA in France. She spent many summers on Monhegan Island, Maine, painting bold colorful landscapes. In Philadelphia, she painted portraits of numerous luminaries such as Federal and Supreme Court judges. She was a frequent exhibitor with the National Academy of Design and was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design in 1938. Her work is included in the collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Delano Art Museum, and Reading (Pa.) Museum.
