There are two other techniques which we use that may be of interest to other artists. One we read in a book the other was recommended by a teacher... An Opaque Projector which will project up to an 8x10. You project the image onto the canvas, to make a sketch. Making it as detailed as you like... The other was from a book, forget the title. You use a plastic 1/8 or 1/4 and 1/2 inch grid, lay it over the image you are going to paint. Then, mark on it important points. Then you use a ruler and depending on how much you with to enlarge the image, draw lines on the canvas, like a one or two inch grid. Then mark the canvas where the same points intersect on the original to the same points on the grid drawn on the canvas. Then you have all the important points you wish make the same in the painting as the photo or image you are going to paint. Personally prefer the Opaque projector. As you can measure the distance from the projector to canvas. Then if you paint over some of your important points, you can again project the image to establish them again...

wow this is surreal, the reflection is spot on. f/v

Even to the streaks that I made in the water. ;) Except there are no ripples in the water, except in the reflection. Forgot that, when making them in the reflections... What helps me a lot drawing, was a college course in Drafting with a 4.0 average. So measure things in paintings to get proportions and perspective correct, which need to be correct. Notice that a lot of artists fail to have perspectives correct.
