Description
Reign of Aztec ruler Tenoch. 17th-century Aztec picture story of the 51-year-reign of their 14th-century ruler Tenoch during the travels from Aztlan to Tenochtitlan where the Aztec Empire was founded. At centre is the prophecy of an eagle on a cactus. Each year is represented by the squares forming the border. The text at bottom names the ten founders of Tenochtitlan. Artwork from 'Purchas his Piligrimes' (1625), the magnum opus of English cleric Samuel Purchas (c.1577-1626). This work, also known as 'Hakluytus Posthumus', was a collection of travel tales seen as a continuation of 'Principal Navigations by Richard Hakluyt.
