Description
The Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy was designed by the aptly named Antonio Da Ponte, whose last name translates "from bridge." His design beat out such notables as Palladio and Michelangelo, whose entries included multiple arches. Da Ponte was seventy-six when the project began in 1588, and eighty years old when it was completed in 1592, and for the next 260 years the bridge remained the only means of crossing the canal on foot until the Ponte dell'Accademia was built in the early 1850's. The Rialto Bridge is still in use today as a combined crossing over the canal and shopping arcade, exactly as Da Ponte intended more than four hundred years ago.
