Ride Into Faerieland
Drawing - Colored Pencil
In the name of this colored pencil drawing, I pay homage to my favorite authors, C.S. Lewis and George MacDonald with the English/Scottish spelling of Faerie.
I CANNOT BEGIN to tell you how much I love to ride in the snow and when it is cold. I love anticipating getting out and feeling the bracing cold. I love the horses warm muzzles and their breath condensing. Leather smells different in the cold and my hair looks better in the cold! (haha)
We rode along a trail that twisted among the trees and the snow dusted branches, creating this bewildering maze that receded into the sky. And then the sun tried to shine through the clouds on this late afternoon.
How glorious are moments like that! For me it comes close to capturing what Lewis and other writers called Norseness, a sort of longing that they wrote into their fantasies and tales of wonder.
Which is why I could not help but add the four fairies. I didnt actually see them, and neither did Gwenn, but I swear that I almost saw them a couple of times; you know, when they CANT QUITE blend in quick enough to escape your peripheral vision!
