Rock Art Of The Ancients
The Forests Edge Photography - Diane Sandoval
No matter how many times I go to Newspaper Rock State Monument, Indian Creek, Utah I find something new. You can stare for hours and still not see it all. Is this an insect with pinchers? The dominant rock art here is at least 18" to 20" long. I don't think I ever want to run into whatever this or was, anywhere. There are pronghorn, elk, lynx, snakes and see if you can guess the other animals or reptiles depicted here...I love the footprints.
These petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock have been inscribed or pecked into the desert varnish of sandstone. The first carvings were made around 2,000 years ago by the Anasazi, Fremont and Navajo tribes in the region. Some say they were messages, maybe directions given, or warnings, but no one really knows what they mean. It makes them all the more fascinating. Enjoy!
