Description
The Rockaway River is a tributary of the Passaic River, approximately 35 mi long, in northern New Jersey. The upper course of the river flows through a wooded mountainous valley, whereas the lower course flows through the populated New Jersey suburbs and former industrial area west of New York City. It drains an area of approximately 130 sq mi.
It rises at the eastern edge of Sussex County and within a few hundred yards enters Morris County, in the Highlands, along the northwestern slope of Green Pond Mountain south of Oak Ridge. It flows SSW, in a direct course between in the valley between the mountain ridges. Northeast of Wharton it emerges from the mountains and flows generally east in a meandering course, past Wharton, Dover, Rockaway, Denville and Boonton, where it passes through the Boonton Gorge. The gorge begins with the impressive 25 foot Boonton Falls. It continues for a little over 1 mile dropping around 120 feet per mile through nearly continuous class 3 and 4 whitewater. On the south side of Boonton it is impounded to form the Boonton Reservoir. Downstream from the reservoir dam it flows south, through Lake Hiawatha, where the river splits and joins again. It then flows through Parsippany and into Hatfield Swamp, where it is joined by the Whippany River and then merges with the Passaic River.
Here the river flows through Grace Lord Park in Boonton.

Allen - nice autumn scenic even if you wouldn't have come away with the shot (but I'm glad you did). - Mike (V)

As a kid, my father would take us for Saturday afternoon rides up in the hills out behind our place. Silver Star and Larch Mountains were our usual destinations, and from several vantage points, we could see Mt St Helen's (before an after it blew) .... Always super cool! But the best part of the trips were always when we got to stop at the creeks and tiny mountain streams. This is such a typical setting that he would unleash us on! I LOVE that your description has details of where this is and where it goes. Stunning Picture! And another great moment for me down memory-lane! V&F ❤
