The 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan took office in 1981 after a period of American economic decline and loss of standing in the world. His eight years in office brought economic prosperity, the imminent collapse of the Soviet empire and a greater sense of patriotism among most Americans. He survived an assassination attempt in 1981 and endured the scandal of the Iran-Contra affair in 1987. Reagan continues to rank among the most popular of all modern U.S. presidents in public opinion polls.
