Description:
A recent trip to Europe involved a two week cruise on the Danube River beginning in Nuremburg and ending in Budapest. On the way we stopped in Durnstein, Austria, in a wine growing region west of Vienna. It's a picturesque little town dominated by this range of rock pinnacles and the ruins of this castle, reputed to be the place where Richard the Lionheart was held hostage for a year during his return from the crusades. The afternoon light illuminated the scene beautifully, but I was most struck by how similar the 1000-year old castle was to the millions of years-old rocks. It seems that Mother Nature is more merciless with things man made than things of her own doing. Some days before we were in Nuremburg where we visited the ruins of monuments and massive structures built by the Nazis. But that's another story.
