Russian women, dressed in black, walk across a snow-covered square toward two B yzantine-style, Russian Orthodox churches. Both churches are all white and dat e from the 14th and 16th centuries. The mid-14th century (c. 1340) Church of th e Trin- ity (to the right of the view) is more austere in adornment than its 16th-century c ounterpart, the Church of the Assumption (c. 1550). Trinity has only one centr al onion dome, while Assumption has five, four of which are blue with gold star s, and a fifth, the largest, which is gilded.
