Description
S Monocerotis star. 19th-century astronomical observation of the star S Monocerotis (15 Monocerotis). North is at top. The star is at centre, with a small part of the NGC 2264 nebula visible below and right of the star. S Monocerotis is around 1000 light years away, in the constellation of Monoceros. This 3-hour exposure was obtained on 13 February 1895, from the observatory in Crowborough, Sussex, UK. This observatory was built and operated by British amateur astronomer Isaac Roberts (1829-1904), one of the pioneers of the new techniques of astrophotography.
