Description
Sage (Salvia officinalis) leaf trichomes, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Stomata (small openings), and simple (hair-like) and glandular (round) trichomes, are seen here. Stomata allow gas exchange between the atmosphere and the inside of the leaf. Trichomes are specialised structures that may perform several functions, such as preventing water loss or deterring animals from eating the plant. Magnification x180 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
