Description
The Santa Justa Elevator (aka Carmo Elevator) is one of Lisbon's best-loved landmarks. It was built at the turn of the century by Raoul de Mesnier du Ponsard, a french architect born in Portugal. Built to connect downtown to Carmo Square (the city's lowest and highest points), the elevator is 147 feet high and it was originally powered by steam. The top of its Neo-Gothic tower has splendid panoramic views of the city, including over Rossio Square, the castle and the river. If you ever come to Lisbon, Portugal, don't miss the opportunity to visit this extraordinary example of post-Eiffel iron architecture.
