Sarcophagus Formation On Seaside Rocks
Photograph - Photography
This rock formation, resembling a sarcophagus, is at the edge of Monterey Bay at Pacific Grove in central California..... During countless winter storms, powerful Pacific Ocean waves have battered the rocky shoreline along the southern part of this bay. The rocks are what is left from geological mountain-building processes that began millions of years ago....The bay is also known as the world-renowned Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. It begins at the edge of the shoreline and extends about 30 miles into the Pacific Ocean. The sanctuary is home to a variety of marine mammals, such as sea otters and sea lions; sea birds including pelicans, cormorants, and sea gulls; and scores of fish species.... Migrating whales are often seen from the shoreline as they begin their annual migrations, much to the delight of whale watchers who take boat trips to view them up close.
