In the 1930s and 1940s, many distinguished buildings in the historic district were demolished to make way for new development. In 1955, the demolition of the City Market on Ellis Square and attempted demolition of the Davenport House, prompted seven Georgia women, to create the Historic Savannah Foundation. The foundation was able to halt some further destruction of historic buildings and to preserve original structures. These efforts, have contributed greatly to Savannah's now-famous rebirth.
The city's popularity as a tourist destination grew in the 1980s and was solidified by the best-selling 1994 book and 1997 motion picture Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
