Description
These beautiful Scimitar Horned Oryx were taken at the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, San Antonio, Texas which provides a sanctuary to animals from, Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, South America and North America. They have a highly successful breeding program for the majority of the animals. As a result they are taking an active role to help propagate many threatened and highly endangered species from around the world.
The scimitar oryx or scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah), also known as the Sahara oryx, is a species of Oryx now extinct in the wild.
It formerly inhabited all of North Africa. The scimitar oryx formed herds of mixed sexes of up to 70 members, usually guided by the bulls. They inhabited semideserts and deserts and were adapted to live in the extreme heat, with their efficient cooling mechanism and very low requirement of water. The scimitar oryx was once widespread in northern Africa. Its decline began as a result of climate change, and later it was hunted extensively for its horns.

You have found such wonderful symmetry in these scimitar's. Sorry but couldn't pass up the play on words. A great wildlife image Tessa.

Amazing capture, Tessa, that they would be back to back like this and horns facing each other perfectly!!! Terrific work, F/L/P

Such a beautiful capture of these two Horned Oryx. I love how their horns match up, standing together like that. Thank you for the description. Such a shame and so sad when animals are close to or have gone extinct! Fave

Hi Tessa~~a very beautiful photograph- how the pair are standing is very interesting! Sure a shame that this species of Oryx has become extinct in the wild- hopefully the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch in San Antonio, Texas will be successful at turning this around!! F&L&G+&Pin &Twt!!

Thank you so much Will! I hope so too. Thank goodness we have places like this which are trying to preserve our endangered species.

Gorgeous capture Tessa! Funny thing, I lived in San Antonio for a year and a half but never visited this place--it was on the list though. l/f/t
