Description
Light micrograph of a sheep tick (Ixodes ricinus) hypostome. This is the mouthpart that is inserted into the host's skin during feeding. The backward-pointing projections prevent easy removal of the tick. Microscopic contrast method: Differential interference contrast with Lambda quarter plate. Due to the different thickness of the sting parts, the color turns to blue on the thin parts. Deep focus stacking. Magnification 450x when printed at 10 centimetres width.
