Mustangs in classic pose at Duxford - a low tight formation pass along the crowd line - proudly demonstrating the fine lines of the thoroughbred. The P51 came about almost by accident, the initial design the result of a request from the UK for a better product than the P40 Tomahawk. Seen as a concept challenge by North American the prototype was flight tested only 117 days after first drawings produced - myth and legend has it that the roughed out design was done over lunch and the restaurant table cloth hustled off to the workshop! Using radical new wing aerodynamics the P51 was the most efficient aircraft of its time thus allowing for high speed and, crucially, greatly extended range. The first examples supplied to the RAF, with the original Allison engine, proved to be completely outclassed above 20,000 ft and the type was only saved from rejection by Rolls Royce carrying out a trial fit of the high performance Merlin. Success to the tune of 450 mph and 41,000ft service ceiling resulted and the P51 became pivotal to the continuance of the B17 bomber offensive.
