Gorgeous work, Jane, speaking about the deep meaning of introspection, about those special moments in our lives when we foresee the hidden sense of our existence....... when the answers are not important, indeed, 'cause we already have the ANSWER..... Profound and wonderful piece. f,v

Oh, so sorry Geoff.I just went to adapt my reply to your beautiful comment and deleted you by mistake! I have done that several times!. I hope you had time to read my previous reply. If not, I'll explain again. This is painted on" Canson" paper. It is specially formulated for pastel work and has a smooth and a rough side. I would have used the rough side for this which gives the textured effect you are seeing.

Another excellent work Jane! As you are interested in technic that I am using with glossy paper I am interested also in your textural effects which are amazing! vf

Jane Small replied:

Mikhail, thank you so much for your comment on this. I did this painting a long time ago, and this one does not have acrylic added. Just soft pastel, but using a black paper.Pastel often works very well on darks.I'm happy you like it!

Almo, again, I am amazed at your insights. Your idea of Mary Magdalene is so beautiful that I think you might understand this picture better than me ! I feel that bit of "Mary" that is in all of us can be so in tune with that other-ness by being still.Your brilliant concept of the Alpha and Omega is a wonderful way of describing the "Now" The beginning and end coming together all at once "now" in stillness. No past, no future. Timeless. And the way you describe the tension and longing is poignant and perfect too. What else can I say, except to thankyou so much for this wonderful feedback !

Maybe it was the vertical format, that reminds me of a recently commented painting of yours, maybe the same style, but most, I would say, its the very expressively symbolic character of this painting. I did not consider one second to realize.., dont know whether I am right,.. two persons of the New Testament, meaning Maria Magdalene and Jesus Christ. Of course you didnt tell this in your description, I know, they are as cryptic as your paintings, or to use your own words..."the figure does not communicate in words but in symbols"... Well this does exactly apply to your paintings. I dont mention such things like the clothes, the two persons wear, well, even nowadays you can see people wearing clothes like this in India, Pakistan or elsewhere in the world. No,... I do not mean that,...that would be too easy, too literal....its the symbolic character again, I am invoking. A person standing at the end of a way (" ..I am alpha and omega, beginning and end..."), ... we discussed already the meaning of paths like that, a person in almost submissive attitude, the shy look of a young, beautifull woman on him, the person we are talking about framed by the blossomed trees, at the fixing point of view, If we want to speak in the technical language of art,...this can only be one person, you painted twice in other paintings. If there would be no female person in this picture, it nevertheless would be a wonderful, a symbolically transcendental one. But that way, you painted it, there is an incredibly strong suspense and tension, in the painting and between the two persons, we can only describe as longing, well, yes,.... as love... Only a great master of art can express this not in words, only in symbols... Almo
