Silicon (IV) chloride producing fumes. A strip of red litmus paper has been dipped into the liquid and turned pink. This shows that silicon (IV) chloride is acidic. The fumes are caused by the chemical reacting with the moisture in the air. The vapour formed is an irritant to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Silicon (IV) chloride is also corrosive and may cause burns.
