This photo of Sitka, Alaska, was taken from the footpath on the John O’Connell Bridge. The bridge connects the city of Sitka on Baranof Island to Japonski Island. The city’s airport, the University of Alaska Southeast, Mt. Edgecumbe High School, a Native hospital, and a Coast Guard Air Station are located on Japonski Island. (The island was named by Russians around 1805, after Japanese fishermen became stranded on the island.) Baranof Island, seen here, is named for Alexander Baranov, who was instrumental in the founding of the first European settlement on the Island, as Governor of the Russian American Company.
