Description
I saw this on a motorcycle ride from California to Tulsa, Oklahoma in November of 1982. It was very cold and I had an ear infection. Yet, I pulled off and rode down old Hwy 66, west of Joseph City where the pavement ended. I took a couple of photos and rode on. The part that says "Big Sale" was painted on a bed sheet draped over the fence, flapping lazy in the breeze. After about 10 years I painted the scene in a photo realistic style, I spent a year working on it. My brother (also an artist) suggested I should paint it in it's former glory, with kids and cars. I decided to portray it just as I saw it, with the fading colors still vibrant against the cold November sky. I went back to this spot in 2000, and it is gone now. The sign that says "Indian Curios and Gifts" is still there, painted over with "Feed for Sale". The rest of the property had a mobile home, gravel and a pickup truck. I love this image, a ghostly reminder of the highway joys that used to line the Mother Road.
