Sculpture - Clay
To celebrate the year of the dragon, 2012, I made this by assembling slabs and pieces of moist clay. I used metal and wooden sculpting tools to carve and shape fine details. I'm still working on making the latex mold of it. With that, I can re-create it in cement. The cement copies will be sold as outdoor sculptures. I'd like to paint the cement with metallic silver paint. It's very large. Even though the innards are stuffed with rolled and taped newspaper, I used over 150 pounds of moist clay to form the dragon shape on the outer layer. I was unable to attend a fantasy convention due to time and physical limitations, so I thought I'd go ahead and have fun making this anyway. It's too large to fire in my kiln. When I'm done using it to make the mold, I'll decide whether I want to split it up into pieces which I'll fire and reassemble. The original background shows my messy basement work area. I Photoshopped it with blue swirls. I didn't like the results with firey colors like red and orange. He's asleep, so he needs the peacefulness of blue. If you'd like to see how it looks against the original background and how it looked at different stages as the work progressed, many pictures can be seen at my website, www.artbyjoycejackson.com, and also at my blog there. One of my early posts of a pic of this on Facebook brought me 1,362 page views from August 8 to August 14, 2012!
