This gorgeous pendant is composed of a fossilized ammonite, lovingly cradled in Sterling silver-filled wire which is framed in a lovely hand-woven lattice. The pendant is suspended on an 18" long silver-plated chain, for your convenience and measures 53x32x15mm (2.1" x 1.3" x 0.6"). 3 natural cavities were preserved in their original, hollow state. Wow!
Ammonites are extinct marine molluscs, most closely related to modern octopi, squids and, to a lesser extent, nautiloids. The word, "ammonite", was inspired by the spiral shape of their shells. Originally, they were called ammonis cornua ("horns of Ammon") because this Egyptian god was typically depicted wearing ram's horns. Faint sutures (crack-like patterns) may be visible on the surface of the shell and coincide with segments inside that were added as the organism grew over time. The soft body of the organism would only have lived in the largest, outer compartment. The smaller, inner compartments were filled with air and used by the ammonite to control buoyancy (floating depth) in the water column. It is thought ammonites inhabited ancient shallow seas and succumbed to the same mass extinction responsible for the demise of the dinosaurs. This fossil was found in Madagascar.
Your pendant will arrive in a lovely gift box, packed securely in a bubble envelope and ship with tracking direct from my studio to your chosen destination.
Rugged, organic and gorgeous, this pendant truly reflects the raw beauty of nature's finest treasures. Makes a great gift!
