Description
This photograph is taken at McGalliard Falls Park. The falls, which cannot be seen in this photograph, is owned by the town of Valdese, North Carolina, which has built a city park around the falls. The Falls is approximately 40 feet.
Meytre Grist Mill, originally built in 1906 by Fred Meytre, utilized the water source to produce corn mill and wheat flour. "In 1916 a flood washed the original waterwheel away and it was changed over to turbine power. Meytre operated the mill until 1941 producing corn mill, wheat for flour and hammer mill for livestock feed." It is my understanding that he was unable to employ younger men to operate the mill as many were being called to serve in World War ll.
The mill was rebuilt in 1982 for the park.
