Description:
I love opera and am one of the founders of an opera company in Portland, Maine called PORTopera. We did a production of Gounod's "Faust" a few years ago. One of the best known scenes is early in the opera when the heroine, an innocent young woman, spins and sings an aria that establishes her character. We staged it this way in kind of a minimalist setting and it was very effective. Of course, the character, Marguerite, runs afoul of the corrupted Dr. Faust and all hell breaks loose, literally, with the character Mephistophiles leading the way.
