Description:

Splash - A spray of water gushes through the flower garden tossing petals hither and yon. Digital abstract by Gae.

One application of the clouds filter, then multiple applications of the difference clouds filter, alternated with scaling, blurring, color changes, fades to overlay or other modes, transformations, warping, distortion filters, selections through channel masks, de-saturations and any or all combinations of the above will create marvelously textured, marbled layers. They are always unique due to the infinite variety of combinations. I will create at least 5 such layers for each image, often using layer modes to blend them into additional patterns. I refer to these as my palette for the image. It can take from 1 to 3 hours to create the palette. I do sometimes reuse a set of palettes often creating diversely different images from the same starting point.
I then may use distortion filters, transformation/warp tools, pen drawn shapes, channel masks, to shape them into an interesting image. Find edges is helpful in adding additional texture to the image. I create custom noise patterns and custom brushes. Distorted strips of colors have created some images. Curves and Hue Saturation layers are used to make a vague image more prominent.
Often the resulting image inspires a more representational piece of art and the pen tool is used to draw shapes which I fill with pieces of the palettes. I move the pieces around to find patterns that help bring shape and dimension to the object. I paint over these with the brush tool to give more shape or shadowing as needed.
Images may go through many stages as I work on them with many versions going into the trash or being re-worked into something totally different. I may intentionally be creating a well planned composition. I may engage in creative experimentation working whatever I end up with into a pleasing or interesting composition.
I have used gradients to fill layers. I have designed works in Illustrator then open them in Photoshop to add texture and depth.
Some images inspire me to layer them with my digital photography. I also use my own photography as reference for my more representational pieces.
