Spoon With Black Olives- Study In Oil On Panel
Painting - Oil On Panel
The Juneau Plein Rain painter's group, of whom I am a member, spends a week-end each spring in retreat from everyday toils to be immersed in the mutual pursuit of art and beauty. Many painterly works emerge from this each year, and are typically rounded up in a show at some local gallery.
Sitting in fading afternoon light, sipping a glass of wine and warming myself from true plein air misadventures of blowing freezing rain, I scavenged a few blackish blue olives from the appetizer plate and set up this still life. The shine and the puddle of olive juice in the depth of the spoon drew me in. I set a one hour timer and went to work. I really like the freshness of this one and after some weeks of consideration, cannot bear the thought more work on it. My beloved teacher once advised that if you cannot easily see how you might improve upon what you have painted, consider it finished. Wish I always followed her advice.
