Description
Catherine Palace is located 25 km southeast of St Petersburg, Russia. It was constructed originally, as a summer home, by Catherine The Great, wife of Peter The Great in 1717. Outdated it was redesigned in a Rococo style during the reign of her daughter Empress Elizabeth in 1752.
The efforts of designer Bartolomeo Rastrelli believed the palace should be created for the common glory of Russia and that this residence be called Tsarskoye Selo, The Tsars Village.
After the siege of Leningrad only a shell of the palace remained when German forces intentionally destroyed the residence. Fortunately the interior had been well documented and was of great assistance in the reconstruction of the Palace which continues to this day.
Luxury, opulence, excess… this rivals Frances Palace of Versailles.
